David Larsen’s The Peplowski Project is a rousing recording featuring clarinet great Ken Peplowski. Larsen, who plays baritone, alto and tenor sax as well as clarinet is the driving force behind this effort which took inspiration from straight-ahead albums of the 1950s, which were arranged the legendary Al Cohn. Tunes from the period are central to the set here, along with several penned by Larsen. The vibe is bouncy and uptempo for the most part with outstanding contributions from all of the players. In addition to Larsen and Peplowski, the band includes the talents of Jake Svendsen on piano, Josh Skinner on bass and Brendan McMurphy on drums. The unit sounds totally on point with each other, and each of the tunes, resulting in some stellar performances and fantastic interplay from the quintet.
