(Anya Malkiel)

Bay Area vocalist Anya Malkiel grew up in the former Soviet Union where jazz was forbidden. But listening to prized bootleg copies of jazz’s great female vocalists, she aspired to become one of them. She’s honed her craft quite well over the years, as we can hear on her fantastic debut recording From The Heart. Malkiel deftly places her own mark on a range of vocal standards with a relaxing, confident delivery. Her vocals are enhanced by solid musicianship from a band that is comprised of Randy Porter on piano, John Wiitala on bass, Jason Lewis on drums, Jim Schneider on saxophone and flute and Christian Tamburr on vibes. This is a talented singer and recording that are well worth checking out.
