On his self-titled debut, John Pachnos introduces himself as both a gifted bassist and an imaginative composer with a collection that reflects a deep respect for the jazz tradition while embracing a broad musical vocabulary. Joined by Caleb Heinze on guitar, Carter Vames on saxophone and flute, Frankie Midnight on piano, and Justin Vedovelli on drums, Pachnos leads a cohesive quintet whose chemistry stems from years of playing together. The album is built entirely around Pachnos’ original compositions, drawing inspiration from hard bop, funk, Latin rhythms, Greek musical heritage, rock, and modern jazz without ever losing its straight-ahead foundation. Each composition is thoughtfully constructed, giving the ensemble ample room for expressive improvisation while maintaining strong melodic direction and rhythmic momentum. This is a compelling new voice and first outing.
