A Rise In The Road is the Yellowjackets’ 22nd recording in a storied 32-year career. Throughout the years, this band like most bands, has seen members come and go, but what’s consistent with this particular musical entity and this project is their signature, sophisticated sound. This project sees the addition of bassist Felix Pastorious (yes, son of the legendary Jaco) to the lineup, and the group does not miss a beat. The song list is comprised of compositions by the group’s core members of the last two decades or so; saxophonist Bob Mintzer, keyboardist Russell Ferrante and drummer Will Kennedy. Trumpet phenom Ambrose Akinmusire joins the group on several tracks. As always, you hear the blending of jazz’s past and present in the Jackets’ work. This is another solid production by a band that remains one of the premier franchises in the jazz genre .
