Live Today is the tremendously versatile recording from multi-talented bassist Derrick Hodge. Hodge’s bass voice and all of the instruments on this projects are aided immensely by his voice as a composer, which shines through beautifully on this production. Hodge blends a cacophony of experiences into an aural mood rich with rhythm, grooves and timeless melodies. Joining Hodge in this effort is a lineup as musically diverse as his compositions, including Marcus Strickland on saxophones Chris Dave and Mark Colenburg on drums, James Poyser on keyboards, Robert Glasper on piano, and Kenyon Harrold on trumpets. The project also includes a couple of vocal contributions from hip-hop artist Common and singer/guitarist Alan Hampton. Hodge finds a way to make it all work together with his vision as the sonic thread.
