Lost and Found documents a seminal moment in Vance Thompson’s artistic life, shaped by necessity as much as creative resolve. After years as a trumpeter, Thompson was forced to step away from his horn due to focal dystonia, a neurological disorder that ultimately made continued trumpet performance unworkable. Rather than retreat from music, he redirected his voice to the vibraphone, using the instrument’s resonance and clarity as the foundation for this long-awaited return as a leader. The album features Thompson leading a quartet of longtime collaborators, with the emphasis placed on melodic clarity and ensemble interplay. Alongside Thompson on vibraphone, the session features Taber Gable on piano, Steve Kovalcheck on guitar, Tommy Sauter on bass, and Marcus Finnie on drums, resulting in a recording that reflects both continuity with Thompson’s past and a thoughtful reimagining of his creative path.
