Saxophonist/composer Troy Roberts takes a trip back to his roots on his 12th recording as a leader. Stuff I Heard is a collection of completely original compositions with a more decidedly orchestral vibe. The tunes are an interesting blend of classical and jazz sounds. Roberts takes on even more than the saxophone, in this case, tenor, alto and soprano, (accompanying each other), but also handles acoustic and electric bass duties. Drummer Jimmy McBride joins in on the effort, which sounds like it has many more players than just he and Roberts. The production is truly a gem and an incredible showcase of Roberts’s depth as a songwriter and remarkably versatile musician.
