Unbroken, by singer Tiffany Austin, is a celebration of the lineage of the African-American experience through song. It is also the second recorded chapter in the emergence of an incredible soulful singer in the truest since of the word “soulful”. With Austin, one senses a deep connection to the essence of a song, not merely a performance to accompaniment, that’s conveyed quite powerfully. Produced by Richard Seidel, the project is elevated by the talents of a rhythm section that includes pianist Cyrus Chestnut, bassist Rodney Whitaker, and drummer Carl Allen. Trombonist Mitch Butler provides the outstanding arrangements of the tunes and joins a horn section that includes tenor saxophonist Teodross Avery and trumpeter Ashlin Parker. Austin also contributed four solid originals and penned lyrics to tunes Charles Mingus and Ornette Coleman, in a list that includes tunes by John Coltrane,Dizzy Gillespie and Donny Hathaway. This production is top-notch from start to finish, and Tiffany Austin is a meteoric talent you should know and hear.
