Saxman Dave Wilson channels the inspiration of John Coltrane and his music into the compelling Stretching Supreme. The meditative soul of Trane’s magic, along with a Wilson composition, is imbued with the energy of a live setting with this fantastic work. The production is a collection of Wilson’s performances at the famous Chris’ Jazz Cafe in Philadelphia, the bulk of which was recorded in 2017, with tunes from a 2018 session adding nicely to the mix. Wilson’s wonderful tone on the horn blends so well with his bandmates on the effort, including pianist Kirk Reese; bassist Tony Marino and drummer Alex Ritz. Philly drum legend Dan Monaghan plays the sticks on the 2018 dates included here. All of the players deliver so well and the result is a thoroughly enjoyable musical endeavor.
