On Tatum’s Swingin’ Session, vocalist Tatum Langley and the Shout Section Big Band, under the baton (and trumpet) leadership of Brett T. Dean, deliver a spirited salute to the golden era of swing, threading fresh arrangements and vocal flair through a venerable repertoire. Langley’s agile, three-and-a-half-octave voice transitions from lyric intimacy to scatting bravura, while the big band, featuring saxophonists like Ted Holtz and Andy Schlinder, the trombone of Nick Roach, and trumpeters including John Dorhauer, responds with crisp ensemble punch, fantastic solos, and warm harmonies. The repertoire draws from the Great American Songbook and inventive reworkings by band composers like Dorhauer, Joshua Jern, and Brian Stark. While the spirit of classic swing is firmly honored, the album also includes theatrical Broadway touches and contemporary rhythmic touches—making the “session” feel truly live and boundaryless.
