Alto saxophonist Richie Cole delivers an outstanding tribute to the venerable Julian “Cannonball” Adderley with his latest effort. Inventive arrangements of classic tunes written or made famous by Adderley are the heartbeat of Cannonball. It’s a toe-tapping session from start to finish, on which Cole features trombonist Reggie Watkins and is joined by the Pittsburgh Alto Madness Orchestra in this tribute to his legendary hero. The production also includes the talents of Rick Matt on tenor saxophone, J.D. Chaisson on trumpet, Eric Susoeff on guitar, Kevin Moore on keyboards,Vince Taglieri on drums and the album producer Mark Perna on bass. Singer Kenia joins in on a tune, providing vocals in Portuguese. The symbiosis between Cole and the band is outstanding with wonderful solos throughout. A fitting homage from legendary jazz hero to another. Bravo.
