While We Were Away is a live and truly engaging 2-disc recording by the Paul Jost Quartet. Jost on vocals and harmonica leads the group through an eclectic set of compositions including nicely re-imagined covers and substantive originals. Recorded at the Soapbox Gallery in Brooklyn, New York, the production has a very intimate feeling. In addition, to Jost’s soulful and heartfelt delivery, the effort is graced by equally outstanding performances by the quartet’s players, which includes Jim Ridl on piano, Tim Horner on drums, with Dean Johnson, Lorin Cohen, and Martin Wind handling the bass duties on separate tracks. A superb effort by all involved.
