Saxophonist Noah Preminger builds his compositions around his horn rather than a piano. In fact, Genuinity, Preminger’s 10th as a leader, is his fifth in a pianoless quartet setting. With the under-girding of the piano absent, Preminger’s solid tone and the trumpet work of Jason Palmer shines through a bit more brightly, in the free-ranging and exploratory compositions. Still, the presence of a rhythm section anchored by bassist Kim Cass and drummer Dan Weiss is significant piece of the production. The group’s artistry and the spirit of the tunes makes for a fantastic musical journey.
