Leigh Pilzer has long been admired as one of the foremost voices on baritone saxophone, and Keep Holding On presents her in a streamlined organ-trio setting that places equal emphasis on her expressive playing and increasingly confident writing. Backed by Paul Bratcher on Hammond B3 organ and Greg Holloway on drums, with guest appearances by Jen Krupa on trombone, Kenny Rittenhouse on trumpet, Ally Hany Albrecht on trumpet, and Joe Jackson on trombone, Pilzer crafts a program that is rooted in the straight-ahead jazz tradition while remaining fresh and personal. Most of the music consists of Pilzer’s original compositions and arrangements, complemented by one composition each from Bratcher and Holloway, giving the session a cohesive identity while allowing each musician’s voice to emerge naturally. The organ trio provides a warm, swinging foundation for Pilzer’s robust baritone sound, and the selective use of additional horns broadens the album’s palette. Rather than relying on familiar standards, the recording succeeds through memorable original writing, thoughtful ensemble interplay, and a relaxed confidence that makes this one a real favorite. Top-notch from start to finish.
