On Crowded Heart, singer Judy Wexler delves into newer material with the makings of standards for the modern day. Produced with pianist Alan Pasqua, the recording brings some true gems to the fore. Selected are songs by Alan Broadbent, Fred Hersch, Norma Winstone, Rene Marie, Gregory Porter, and Kurt Elling, to name a few. Pasqua finds some wonderful ways to arrange the songs and creates fantastic canvases on which Wexler wonderfully paints. Helping to create the colors are the talents of Larry Koonse on guitar, Darek Oles on bass, Steve Hass on drums, Bob Sheppard on alto flute, Josh Johnson on alto sax Stefanie Fife on cello and Aaron Serfaty on percussion. A fresh and refreshing production.
