Pianist and composer Josh Nelson was brought to Japan by jazz aficionado and coffee shop owner, Dai Murata, who is a wealth of knowledge on all things jazz. The Discovery Project – Live in Japan is the product of Nelson’s 2019 visit along with his trio of Alex Boneham on bass and Dan Schnelle on drums. The performances featured visual elements and lighting effects that must have contributed to the deeply transportive compositions, penned by Nelson. The group clicks like clockwork through a menu comprised of uptempo swing and contemplative tunes. The slight detour is a Monk’ tune, the arrangement of which, fits nicely into the production. A thoroughly worthwhile listening experience.
