Drummer Jonah David makes a compelling entrance into the jazz scene with his debut album, Waltz for Eli. Collaborating with pianist Joel Sanford and bassist Joe Bussey, David presents a collection of straight-ahead compositions. Recorded in 2024 while serving as a percussion instructor at the Naval School of Music in Virginia Beach, The trio’s interplay is fluid and conversational, creating a warm, live-in-the-room feel, allowing the nuances of each musician’s performance to shine. The production is further enhanced by contributions from guest musicians, including Jeremy Pelt on trumpet, Etienne Stadwijk on organ and rhodes, Bryan Carrott on vibraphone, and Jason Arce tenor sax and flute, as well as Ann Perkins who appears on a couple of vocal tracks. His first recorded effort showcases David’s technical prowess and his ability to craft an engaging musical experience.
