John Fedchock’s Justifiably J.J. is a masterful bow to the legendary jazz trombonist J.J. Johnson, marking a celebration of Johnson’s 100th birthday. Fedchock delivers eight swinging compositions either written by or associated with Johnson, staying true to the original arrangements rather than reimagining them. The production was recorded live in front of an audience at The Jazz Kitchen in Indianapolis, Indiana. Featuring musicians such as pianist Steve Allee, bassist Jeremy Allen, and drummer Sean Dobbins, the album brings Johnson’s bebop trombone innovations into focus while highlighting Fedchock’s own prowess on the instrument. The release is a fitting homage to Johnson’s lasting influence on the jazz world and especially on the evolution of the trombone
