Singer Gabrielle Stravelli delivers a wonderful tribute to Willie Nelson with Pick Up My Pieces. The production hits a plethora and moods and tones on songs mostly written, associated with, or made famous by Nelson. Stravelli does it her way and makes it work in a whole other style. Inventive arrangements of the tunes by the project’s bassist and co-producer, Pat O’Leary, add an extra measure of quality to the recording as well. The musicianship here is wonderful and includes Joshua Richman on pianos, Eric Halverson on drums, Scott Robinson on tenor sax and flute, Evan Arntzen on alto sax, Jay Brandford on baritone sax, John Allred on trombone and Jon Erik Kellso on trumpet. There’s a string section added on a couple of tracks and the project’s other co-producer, Art Hirahira, provides piano and Hammond B3 organ on several tunes. A truly entertaining work that speaks to the boundlessness of great music.
