Pianist and composer Daniel Szabo has assembled a pretty significant work with Visionary. The eighth recording under his own name, Szabo crafts a compelling blend of jazz and orchestral arrangements that provide a showcase for the fine display of artistic dexterity on the part of all of the players. The configuration of a jazz rhythm section with a woodwind sextet with a string quartet, as heard here, yields some truly expansive music and performances. The outstanding lineup includes the talents of Bob Sheppard on flute and tenor sax, Peter Erskine on drums, Edwin Livingston and Mike Valerio on bass, Kim Richmond on clarinet, alto and soprano saxophones, Sara Andon on flute, and Timothy Williams, who conducted the string and winds. This is truly a work of artistry that lives up to the project’s title.
