Daggerboard and The Skipper is the latest recording from the San Francisco-based collective Daggerboard. The unit is joined by bassist Henry “The Skipper” Franklin, whose musical presence is felt quite strongly on the effort. The soaring and adventurous aural landscapes are the product of the collaboration between percussionist Gregory Howe, trumpeter Erik Jekabson and Franklin in the 9-track set of lush original compositions. The notes are brought to life by the outstanding musicianship of the aforementioned players along with that of pianist Matt Clark, guitarist Russ Howe (who also contributed as a songwriter), vibraphonist Roger Glenn, drummer Mike Hughes, and a string section that includes the talents of Mads Tolling and Anthony Blea on violins, Charith Premawardhana on viola and Ben Davis on cello. It’s just an outstanding collection of engaging musical artistry from beginning to end.
