Deep Blue is the outstanding fourth release from pianist Charlie Dennard. The recording is a nice mix of compositional styles, all courtesy of Dennard, which combine engaging hooks and extensive winding excursions that are compelling. A truly nice mix of moods with nice uptempo numbers and lovely ballads. The album is centered around a piano trio, which includes Max Moran on basses and Doug Belote on drums. The unit is augmented by an array of talents which include guitarists Steve Masakowski and Brian Seegers, tenor saxophonist Brad Walker, flugelhorn and trumpet player Eric Lucero, trombonist Rick Troisen, and percussionist Carlos Lopez, among others. A truly stellar effort.
