Brain Scan marks veteran saxophonist and woodwind musician Brian Scanlon’s debut recording as a leader. It’s a quite wonderful debut with an emphasis on original compositions that bear significant meaning to Scanlon, with dedications to his late brother Mark, his girlfriend, Grover Washington, Jr. and David Sanborn. The tones convey an array of moods and tempos for a well-balanced production. Joining Scanlon is a lineup of fantastic players who add greatly to the quality of the effort. The personnel includes Tom Ranier and Ed Czach on piano, Trey Henry on bass, Peter Erskine on drums, Andrew Synowiec, Larry Koonse and Avery Scanlon on guitar, and Joey De Leon on percussion. A wonderful artistic achievement.
