Guitarist, composer, and arranger Brent Laidler’s album Hidden Gems takes on some overlooked jazz compositions from as early as the 1920s, reviving them with contemporary flair. Collaborating with a talented ensemble, Laidler’s interpretations showcase his inventive arrangements and deep respect for jazz traditions. Some mainstays from the musician’s previous production return for this effort, including Mark Buseli on trumpet, Ned Boyd on saxophone and flute, Jamie Newman on organ, Scott Pazara on bass, and Richard Floyd on drums. The album’s conception during the COVID-19 lockdown allowed Laidler the opportunity to delve into his extensive collection of vintage fake books, unearthing and reshaping these musical treasures. The result is a vibrant collection that bridges the past and present, offering listeners a fresh perspective on jazz’s rich heritage.
