One for Lew is trumpeter’s Bill Warfield’s homage to his mentor and friend Lew Soloff. It was Soloff’s mesmerizing solo on the Blood, Sweat & Tears hit “Spinning Wheel” that made an 18-year old Warfield pick up the trumpet again. The lively tribute is as big and soaring as the aforementioned solo. Warfield’s big band goes for it and delivers on an array of composed by Lee Morgan, John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Wayne Shorter Dave Brubeck and others. The bandleader contributes about half of the outstanding selection here. A really fantastic large ensemble production.
