Smile is a wonderful recording by Bill Warfield and the Hell’s Kitchen Funk Orchestra. If the unique name is not enough of a clue, this is not your father’s or grandfather’s big band, it’s got a very groove-based vibe that will definitely find you moving with it. Warfield provides the cool, outside-the-box arrangements of some great covers for this fun set of sound and leads the way forward on trumpet. The band is a stellar lineup of musicians which include Andrew Gould and Matt Hong on saxophones and flute, Dave Riekenberg and Blue Lou Marini on various saxes, flute and clarinet, John Eckert on trumpet and flugelhorn, Matt Chertkoff on guitar, Steve Count on bass, Scott Neumann on drums and Cecillia Coleman on piano. Paul Shaffer, formerly of the David Letterman show band, provides Hammond B-3 organ and Fender Rhodes and singers Julie Michaels, Jayne Stewart, and Carolyn Leonhart add some very nice vocals to the mostly instrumental mix. Just a fantastic brew of music.
