Kurt Elling Dedicated To You: Kurt Elling Sings The Music of Coltrane and Hartman
(Concord Records)

Kurt Elling is a true American storyteller of song and his latest recording is a further effort in that tradition. Elling takes on the classic Coltrane/Hartman collaboration in fine style, reccording live at Rose Hall home of Jazz at Lincoln Center. Augmenting the trio of pianist Laurence Hobgood, Kurt’s longtime co-arranger and musical partner, is the ETHEL string quartet and the great Ernie Watts on saxophone. Not to be missed on this recording is his version of “Easy To Remember” in which Elling wonderfully paints the backstory of the men who inspired this project as vividly as a Ken Burns documentary. This recording is as much a tribute to the reliably stellar talents of Elling, as the gentlemen who compelled him to take this wonderful musical journey.
