Pharez Whitted – For The People

(Origin Records)

Chicago-based trumpeter Pharez Whitted follows his 2010 return from a 14-year recording hiatus with a fantastic new effort titled For The People. Whitted again surrounds himself with a solid lineup that includes Bobby Broom on guitar, Eddi Bayard on saxophones, Dennis Carroll on bass, Ron Perrillo on keys and Greg Artry on drums. The album is comprised entirely of Whitted’s own engaging, original compositions, which in tandem with the high quality of musicianship included here, makes for a top-notch listening experience.

Jana Herzen – Passion of a Lonely Heart

(Motema)

Guitarist and vocalist Jana Herzen is back with a great new recording that pares down instrumentation to allow her vocals to shine through. The project is titled Passion of a Lonely Heart. The album has Herzen accompanied solely by bassist Charnett Moffett. The two musicians work well together to deliver a quality production. The song list is a blend of classic tunes and original self-penned compositions. On some tracks, voice is Herzen’s only instrument, while others include her terrific 6-string talents, either resulting in music of refreshing simplicity and wonderful artistry.
